El panorama comienza a despejarse para lo que será la nueva realización en torno al Juez Dredd que tendrá a Karl Urban en el rol protagónico y será filmada en 3D en estudios de Sudáfrica bajo la dirección de Pete Travis (Vantage Point) con un guión de Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go). En THR dan cuenta que Lionsgate tomará los derechos de  exhibición de la película y servirá como distribuidor de la película cuyo guión fue definido como si “Duro de Matar visitase Blade Runner”. La situación importa obviamente a Estados Unidos, ya el resto del mundo tendrá que aferrarse a la ilusión que alguna distribuidora tome los derechos. Pero estén preparados, porque este tipo de situación generalmente apunta a retrasos de exhibición en este lado del mundo.

Les recuerdo que el proyecto promete una fidelidad total al material del cómic, dando un paso al costado de lo que representó el proyecto noventero del viejo Sly. Por ejemplo, la nueva película mantendrá el casco a todo momento y solo veríamos el mentón del actor en tres dimensiones. Como debe ser, porque él es la ley.

Lionsgate To Distribute New Judge Dredd, Film Will Be In 3D It’s still somewhat hard to believe that it’s happening, but fifteen years after Sylvester Stallone’s crap fest Judge Dredd, Hollywood has decided to reboot with Karl Urban under the mask this time around. The film is already set to begin production in South Africa fairly soon under the direction of Pete Travis based on a script by 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland, but now it will enter with confidence that comes with having a major studio at your back. THR reports that Lionsgate has picked up the rights to the film and will serve as distributor. In addition to Dredd, the studio also picked up the Jason Statham actioner Safe as well as the Simon West film Protection with Dwayne «The Rock» Johnson in the lead. As previously announced, the new Dredd film, which will be in 3D, sticks close to the comics from which the character originates and sees Dredd as a law enforcement official with the rights to judge, sentence and execute criminals on the spot.

Given how talented Garland is as a writer (he also scripted the Danny Boyle film Sunshine and this year’s Never Let Me Go), and Urban is as an actor (plus the fact that he won’t be removing the helmet), I feel strangely excited for this film. I can’t say that I’m thrilled to hear that the film will be in 3D, but I’m also not surprised in the least. Here’s hoping that Travis can provide the film that Dredd fans can actually get behind.

  2. Dejando por un lado los problemas de distribución, me parece adecuado que la distribuya Lionsgate, que no le hace ascos al material R ni anda buscando jalar público juvenil. El Juez merece una buena película, con toda la violencia que el caso amerita. Esperemos ahora que aparezcan los Jueces Oscuros. Con el Juez Muerte me conformo…

  4. Uta la wea, capaz que la peli llegue por aca 1 años despues al cine, o peor aun, que salga directo al dvd.
    Deberia ser estreno simultaneo en todo el planeta.

    Tengo la esperanza que al menos salga el Juez Death, ya se dijo antes que saldria Anderson y si respetan la linea argumental original, ambos personajes hacen su primera aparicion en la misma historia. Si es asi, daria paso para que en la segunda pelicula aparezca el resto de los jueces oscuros para liberar a Death de su «prision».

    Y ojala que en la peli muestren el motivo de porque Dredd nunca se quita el casco, para el que no lo sabe, un villano le arranco los ojos y tiene unos implantes bionicos y se ve relindo, por eso no muestra el caracho en publico.
    Aunque en los comics el rostro de Dredd se ha «mostrado» de cierta forma, ya que al igual que en la peli de Stallone, Dredd es un clon del juez Fargo, solo basta con buscar una imagen de Fargo y listo, ese es el rostro de Dredd.
